2012 Geneva Motor Show: New Subaru BRZ sports coupe

The wait is finally over, as the 2012 Geneva Motor Show sees show its new sports car in full production specification in Europe for the first time.

What is it?

Put simply, the Subaru is a lightweight 2+2 sports coupé, powered by a 2.0-litre flat-four boxer engine producing 200hp; it’s the sister car to the GT , which also makes its proper European debut at Geneva 2012. However, the two of them also promise to be the saviours of affordable performance driving.

What’s hot?

200hp doesn’t sound like much, but combined with a low 1,200kg kerb weight and rear-wheel drive with a limited slip differential you’ve got a recipe for big grins at sensible speeds. It’s an old fashioned formula, but an extremely refreshing one in an industry that has become obsessed with high power outputs.

What’s not?

‘Functional’ is about the best thing you can say about the ‘s looks – and the Toyota’s for that matter. While this car really isn’t about visual sex appeal, a little more something something wouldn’t hurt…

How much and when?

Subaru has confirmed a three-model range, with the initial fully loaded version set to be joined two lower specifications in due course – including a stripped out version aimed at tuners and track day enthusiasts. But it hasn’t yet said how much it will cost. Due in summer, and there is already a queue.

Anything else I need to know?

Subaru is yet to reveal any official performance stats, but 200hp in 1,200kg is equivalent to 0-62mph in around 7.0 seconds. Despite all this performance though, CO2 emissions stand at 159g/km – pretty good for a back-to-basics two seater – while the gets Subaru’s great value ‘Everything Taken Care of’ aftercare package free of charge.
