New facelift and more power for 2017 Toyota 86 (ex FR S)

The 2017 (to replace ) to be unveiled at New York Auto Show (Mar 25 – Apr 3, 2016) will have a little extra power. The 2.0-liter boxer-four’s output grows to 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque – increases of 5 hp and 5 lb-ft. The wont be turbocharged just yet. Additional performance thanks to different gear ratios for the six-speed manual transmission, and in addition there is Hill Start Assist Control. New shock and spring rates will affect the handling, as well.

The 86 will have a different facelist than the outgoing . The biggest change is a new front bumper with a large intake that stretches across the coupe’s width, and the two sharp points along the bottom. The back is largely unchanged on a first glance.

Toyota also replaces the headlights and taillights with LED units. The twist-spoke add to the overall look and the tweaks on the inside inclu silver stitching and new materials for the dashboard and doors.

In August 2016, the brand will be terminated and the will be sold in North America as the Toyota 86 starting with the 2017 model year. No word on the Australian market, whether or not this design will eventually reach our shores in 2017 or beyond.
