Report: New Subaru BRZ monthly sales quadrupling anticipated numbers in Japan

The launch of ’s new coupe in has been a well-received one, with a monthly rate of sales quadrupling anticipated numbers.

Subaru’s initial forecast was to sell 450 units in a month, but 3,551 BRZ’s rolled out of dealer’s lots since the February 3rd release.

It appears the younger consumer is after the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder sports coupe, with 60 percent of those driving the rear-wheel drive model home under the age of 40. It comes as no surprise that World Rally Blue Mica is the best-selling color, and it’s refreshing to find that two-thirds have also opted for the manual transmission over the automatic.

We can compare these statistics to the U.S. consumer’s data in a couple of months, as the BRZ goes on sale stateside on April 20. The sales goal for the U.S. is slightly higher then ’s, with an anticipated rate of 500 units per month.

Refresher: Weighing in at just 2,689 pounds, the is powered a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder boxer engine making 200-hp at 7,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 151 lb-ft at 6,600 rpm. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
