Toyota 86 race series confirmed for 2016
plans to introduce a race series for the sports car from 2016 with amateur drivers from across Australia competing against selected professional drivers.

Toyota sales and marketing director Tony Cramb that the competition will come together in coming months.

“A one-make series is something I’ve wanted to support for a long time, and it will definitely happen,” Cramb says.

“The concept is a pro-am, with amateur drivers from across Australia competing against selected professional drivers.

“In short, it will be open to anyone who has a competition licence and can race.

Toyota Australia’s public relations manager Mike Breen explained:  “We just made an announcement at the Festival of 86 because Tada-san was going to be there,”
“We thought we’d use that opportunity to at least announce there would be [a one-make series] in 2016. But we’re not quite at the stage yet where we can give any more detail.”
Breen did confirm that the series would be open both to drivers who race for a living and those in it just for the fun factor.
“It will be a Pro-Am… so we’re looking at having professional drivers as well as amateurs, and we want to try and make it accessible to as many people as possible.”
While the 86 has drawn fire from some quarters for lacking real punch in a straight line, the very nature of the car’s specification is likely to make for close . Breen told motoring.com.au that competition cars will remain very close to production specification.
“The modifications to cars will be minimal… to maintain the reliability and durability of the cars under racing conditions.”
